In the newspaper L’Opinion, Monday, May 15, Emmanuel Macron said he was considering lowering taxes for the middle classes, people with incomes of 1,500 to 2,500 euros per month. Explanations on set with David Boéri.

The President of the Republic is keen to turn the page on pensions and has pledged to lower taxes for the middle class. But who belongs there? “The term has no official definition, it is a solution that is much more political than economic”, explains journalist David Boeri, present, Monday, May 15, on the set of 19/20. In the newspaper L’Opinion, Emmanuel Macron speaks “of those who are too rich to be helped and not rich enough to live well”with incomes of 1,500 to 2,500 euros per month.

Expensive measures?

The reduction in taxation could affect nearly 10 million households. To lower taxes for this segment of the population, “it is possible to lower the tax rate of the 1st income bracket, as in 2019 or to review the family quotient by doubling the share of the first child”, notes David Boéri. But these measures are expensive and do not apply directly to the middle classes. It is also possible to individualize the activity bonus or review the levels of social security contributions for employees according to income. “The improvement in the standard of living must be visible, without causing the public deficit to plunge”concludes the journalist.
