The President of the Republic referred to this August 25, 1944, which “sounded the end of a nightmare of 1,532 days” during his speech on the occasion of the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the event.
Emmanuel Macron presided over the ceremony of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Paris, from August 19 to 25, 1944, on Place Denfert-Rochereau (14th arrondissement), Sunday August 25. The President of the Republic gave a speech, in which he mentioned a “the endless fight against hatred that we must continue today,” after referring to “French will (…) to courageously fight against anti-Semitism” during the Nazi occupation.
The Head of State celebrated “the face of resistant France”recalling this August 25, 1944 which “sounded the end of a nightmare of 1532 days.” A historic day when “Paris became a celebration, that of freedom for all peoples”. He mentioned the “joy of a country, joy of the world” during his speech where he honored the memory of the fighters who liberated the capital from the German yoke. The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, paid tribute to the “heroes of all ages”, evoking “women and men who died on the threshold of freedom” to liberate the city.
Following the speeches by the Head of State and the Mayor of Paris, and three days before the launch of the Paris Paralympic Games on Wednesday, the flame reached Place Denfert-Rochereau, carried by a collective relay of the Companions of the Liberation.
