The traditional commemoration of the massacre of Oradour-sur-Glane (Haute-Vienne) took a special turn this year. The day after the dissolution of the National Assembly by Emmanuel Macron, the President’s trip was closely followed.
80 years after the massacre of Oradour-sur-Glane (Haute-Vienne), the French and German presidents tour the ruins of the martyred village side by side for a moment of history, Monday June 10. Emmanuel Macron and Frank-Walter Steinmeier display their unity to commemorate the victims of Nazi barbarity. 643 victims were murdered in the village. The two heads of state observed a moment of contemplation in the church, where women and children were locked up and burned.
This ceremony, which takes place every year, takes place this year the day after the dissolution of the National Assembly. This first trip by the president is therefore particularly scrutinized, in the heart of this place where history was written. In the morning, the President first went to Tulles, in Corrèze, to pay tribute to the 99 men hanged by the Das Reich division, the same one that burned down Oradour.
