Emmanuel Macron says Putin ‘woke’ NATO ‘with the worst electroshock’

He judged in 2019 that NATO was in a state of “brain death”. Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday May 31 that Vladimir Putin had “wake up” the North Atlantic Treaty Organization “with the worst electroshock” by invading Ukraine.

“Today we need to help Ukraine by all means to carry out an effective counter-offensive”declared the Head of State during the Globsec forum on world security, in Bratislava (Slovakia). “It is essential. This is what we are doing. We must intensify it because what is at stake in the coming months is the very possibility of a chosen and therefore lasting peace”he added.

The President of the Republic also felt that Westerners should provide “tangible and credible security guarantees to Ukraine”while being “much more ambitious” than so far. “This will be the subject of collective discussions in the coming weeks”, from here to the NATO summit in July in Vilnius (Lithuania), said the French president. According to him, Ukraine “today protect Europe”and she is “equipped with so many armaments” it’s in the western interest “that it has credible security guarantees with us in a multilateral framework”.
