Reactions continue after Joe Biden’s withdrawal. French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, July 22, welcomed the “courage” and the “sense of duty” of his American counterpart, who has given up running for the American presidency. He called for the continuation of “the spirit of partnership between the two sides of the Atlantic” beyond the next presidential election, scheduled for November 4.
“I appreciate the courage, the spirit of responsibility and the sense of duty that led you to this decision.”wrote Emmanuel Macron in a letter addressed to Joe Biden, some extracts of which were made public by the Elysée. “As we have just celebrated together the 80th anniversary of the Landing, I hope that this spirit of partnership between the two sides of the Atlantic will continue to drive the historic relations between our two countries.”he added.
After weeks of uncertainty, weakened by doubts about his mental acuity and physical health, the 81-year-old American president announced that he was throwing in the towel very late in the campaign, a month before the convention that should have sworn him in as candidate. Kamala Harris, the first African-American to have acceded to the vice presidency, declared herself ready to “win the nomination” Democrat in view of “beat Donald Trump”.
