Emmanuel Macron rules out NFP government in name of “institutional stability” and announces new consultations starting Tuesday

A first statement, following a series of consultations with political parties and parliamentary groups. According to a statement from the Elysée Palace on Monday, August 26, Emmanuel Macron ruled out the option of a government of the New Popular Front, which nevertheless came out on top in the second round of the legislative elections in July, in the name of “institutional stability”.

“A government based solely on the programme and the parties proposed by the alliance bringing together the most deputies, the New Popular Front, would be immediately censored by all the other groups represented in the National Assembly, the presidency declared in this press release. Such a government would therefore immediately have a majority of more than 350 deputies against it, effectively preventing it from acting. Given the views of the political leaders consulted, the institutional stability of our country therefore requires that this option not be retained.”

Emmanuel Macron “calls on all political leaders to rise to the occasion by demonstrating a spirit of responsibility” and particularly urges socialists, communists and environmentalists to “cooperate with other political forces”. “The discussions with the LIOT group and the EPR, MoDem, Horizons, Radicaux and UDI parties have outlined possible avenues for coalition and joint work between different political sensibilities. These groups have shown themselves open to supporting a government led by a personality who would not come from their ranks,” underlines the press release.

From Tuesday, Emmanuel Macron will launch “a new cycle of consultations” to find a Prime Minister, “with party leaders and personalities distinguished by their experience of service to the State and the Republic”, continues the Elysée in its press release.

“My responsibility is that the country is neither blocked nor weakened. The political parties in government must not forget the exceptional circumstances of the election of their deputies in the second round of the legislative elections.
