The French head of state believes that Thierry Breton will be able “continue to independently carry out important responsibilities” which will be entrusted to him. Ursula von der Leyen has asked member states to propose candidates for the commission by August 30. Each member country has a representative in the Commission College, which forms the political leadership of the European executive for the five-year term of office. specified that she wanted to be systematically offered a woman and a man to occupy the post, in order to have a gender-balanced college. “The only exception is (…) when a serving commissioner remains”explained the German official.
Thierry Breton has held the position of Commissioner for the Internal Market since 2019, a broad portfolio that includes digital and industry. He has established himself as a figurehead of the Commission by tackling the abuse of power by tech giants, but he could be called upon to change positions in the future Commission.
