While the creation of a “active assistance in dying” remains suspended from the arbitrations of Emmanuel Macron, the Head of State assured Wednesday, November 8 in a speech before the Grand Orient of France, that the “right to die with dignity” would be subject to a “law of freedom and respect”.

The president evoked the memory of two Freemason politicians, Henri Caillavet and Pierre Simon, who defended the “right to die with dignity”. Without revealing his precise intentions, Emmanuel Macron nevertheless mentioned that it is a question of“a cause which must find, as I promised, a translation into a law of freedom and respect”.

The bill on the end of life must theoretically be presented in December to the Council of Ministers, after having been postponed. At this stage, the creation of a “active assistance in dying” remains dependent on the decisions of the executive, which intends to articulate this new right with a palliative care development plan.
