In an interview given to “Libération” and “La Croix”, the Head of State detailed the content of the future text on the end of life, which will be submitted to a college of doctors before being presented to parliamentarians.

Sunday March 10, in an interview given to The cross And Release Emmanuel Macron announced a future law on the end of life. It will be neither euthanasia nor assisted suicide, affirmed the head of state, who instead retained the term “assisted dying, because it is simple and human”. Concretely, the president suggested very strict conditions for the request for assistance in dying. Only adults, with full and complete discernment, will be concerned.

Exclusion of Alzheimer’s patients

Alzheimer’s patients will be excluded. They suffer from an incurable illness with a short or medium-term life-threatening prognosis and face intractable pain, which cannot be relieved with treatments. The request for assistance in dying, according to Emmanuel Macron, must be accepted and decided by a college of doctors.

The perspective was welcomed by the association for the Right to Die with Dignity, with some reservations. “We will have to clarify things”, explains Jean-Luc Romero, its honorary president. Many doctors have expressed their concern. Emmanuel Macron recognizes that immense work will be necessary to look at death differently.
