Emmanuel Macron launched Thursday, November 10 in Paris a “online child protection laboratory”. The objective is to counter the growing exposure of minors to Internet pornography, cyberbullying or violence. Several associations had called on the head of state to better protect children in June.

On the occasion of the new edition of the annual Paris Forum on Peace, he invited non-governmental organizations to the Elysée Palace, as well as representatives of major digital platforms and search engines (Meta, Microsoft, Google, TikTok. ..) for the launch of this “Children Online Protection Lab”. Argentinian President Alberto Fernandez and his Estonian counterpart Alar Karis also participated in the launch of this initiative.

This laboratory, which is a “alliance” Between “regulators, NGOs, digital platforms and academia”must identify the “good ways to regulate (the problem) and better protect our children online”, noted Emmanuel Macron. This laboratory will have to determine “how to verify the age of Internet users, recognize minors and protect them well”with respect for privacy and the protection of personal data, he detailed.

It should also focus on “the widespread and growing problem of online harassment and personal violence”, added the head of state. We will also have to see how to act “quickly and in a coordinated manner between multiple digital platforms to remove child pornography or intimate content that has been disseminated without the consent of minors and their families”, observed the President of the Republic. He then called out to new Twitter owner Elon Musk to ask him to join the initiative: “Will the bird protect our children?”wrote Emmanuel Macron.
