“We are completely out of step with the spirit of the French. Emmanuel Macron is putting in place the weakest Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic“, said Sophie Binet, general secretary of the CGT, on Saturday September 14 on France Inter after the nomination by the President of the Republic of Michel Barnier as Prime Minister. “We are very concerned about the situation, which seems to us to be totally crazy from a democratic point of view.”she assures.

“We have a Prime Minister from the party that came last in the elections [législatives]but in addition his movements lead me to think that the rallying of his political family is not a given”says Sophie Binet. Concerning the pension reform, if Michel Barnier says he is ready to “open the debate” for a “improvement”the general secretary of the CGT believes that “It is still a sign of the balance of powera majority of deputies say they are ready to repeal this reform and this is the path that must be taken. What I am asking Michel Barnier to do is to put his method into practice.”

But as for voting on the bill which was tabled by the RN and examined on October 31 by the National Assembly, “It’s PR, posturing, like every time the far right talks about social issues”says Sophie Binet. “Why? Because to be truly repealed, the pension reform needs to have a vote in the Assembly and then in the Senate. However, we know that the extreme right does not have a group in the Senate.”
