Will white smoke come out of the Elysée? Emmanuel Macron will receive former Presidents of the Republic François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday, September 2, as part of his consultations for the appointment of the new Prime Minister, franceinfo and France Télévisions learned Sunday from their entourages.
François Hollande will be received on Monday morning at 11 o’clock, it was specified. The time of Nicolas Sarkozy’s reception has not yet been specified.
On Monday morning, Emmanuel Macron is also due to meet Bernard Cazeneuve, who was François Hollande’s last Prime Minister in the first half of 2017. The former Socialist head of government has been invited to the Elysée to discuss the conditions of an appointment to Matignon, almost two months after early legislative elections which led to a National Assembly without a majority.
The announcement of this meeting comes as the name of Bernard Cazeneuve, who left the PS in 2022, has been circulating for several days for Matignon. “He is not asking for it, but if he does it, it is out of duty”his entourage said. If Emmanuel Macron offers him Matignon, “he will seek to ensure that the conditions for normal institutional functioning are met”his entourage said.
