Emmanuel Macron called for “a ceasefire” Thursday November 9, at the opening of the humanitarian conference on Gaza in Paris. This is the first time, since the start of Israel’s military operation in the Palestinian enclave, that the President of the Republic has also directly called for a cessation of hostilities.
“In the immediate future, it is the protection of civilians that we must work on. To do this, we need a very rapid humanitarian pause”, declared the President of the Republic. “Civilians must be protected, this is not negotiable, it is an immediate necessity” And “a very condition for the effectiveness of our fight against terrorists”he insisted. If the president repeated that Israel had “the right to defend oneself and the duty to protect one’s own”he claimed that the Israeli government had also “an eminent responsibility (…) to respect the law and protect civilians”.
Alongside these declarations, the head of state called “all countries present to increase their financial contributions towards the Palestinian civilian population via the United Nations”after announcing that France will increase its humanitarian aid intended for civilians in the Gaza Strip from 20 million to 100 million euros in 2023.
