During COP28 in Dubai, Emmanuel Macron called on the G7 countries to commit to ending coal production before 2030. But the 140 heads of state are far from agreeing on the exit from energy fossils. – (franceinfo)
During COP28 in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Emmanuel Macron called on Friday, December 1, the G7 countries to commit to ending coal before 2030.
140 world leaders gathered in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) to break with climate paralysis. COP28 successfully kicked off by endorsing the financing by rich countries of the climate damage suffered by the countries of the South. In a committed speech, King Charles III, guest of honor, called for a radical turning point. Presidents and monarchs have taken note, one after the other, of the extreme climate conquering the Earth and the collective apathy in the face of global warming.
Negotiations on fossil fuels to come
Thanks to the energy crisis, global coal consumption has reached unprecedented heights in 2022. “G7 countries must lead by example and commit to ending coal use at home before 2030”, urged Emmanuel Macron, Friday December 1. The science is clear, the UN secretary-general said: the 1.5°C limit is only sustainable if we stop burning fossil fuels. “The planet is fed up with broken climate agreements and neglected carbon emissions reduction targets”, castigated Brazilian President Lula, who will host COP30 in two years. The paragraph proposing to countries to decide on the production or exit of fossil fuels should be debated in the coming days. Joe Biden and Xi Jinping are notably absent from this COP with 80,000 participants, a record.
