Emmanuel Macron asks Azerbaijan to “return to respecting the ceasefire” with Armenia

After new deadly clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Emmanuel Macron met with his counterpart Azerbaijani. The French Head of State asked, Tuesday, September 13, at Ilham Aliyev in “return to the respect of the ceasefire” with Armenia.

During a telephone interview, the French President “tells President Aliev the urgency of putting an end to hostilities”, said the Elysée, while at least a hundred soldiers on both sides were killed Tuesday in fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Emmanuel Macron has “said his very great concern” in the face of these new confrontations and insisted on the need to“intensify negotiation efforts” between the two countries.

The French president also spoke overnight from Monday to Tuesday with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian. He then called the “respect for the territorial integrity of Armenia”. Azerbaijan has accused Armenia of violating “intensely” the ceasefire announced by Russia. France announced on Tuesday its intention to seize the UN Security Council.
