Tuesday July 4, Emmanuel Macron received around 300 mayors at the Élysée Palace. The President of the Republic announced an emergency law to “rebuild much faster” after the riots which have caused significant damage in recent days.

In front of nearly 300 mayors gathered after the riots of recent days, Emmanuel Macron made an announcement on Tuesday July 4 at the Élysée Palace. “We are going to present an emergency law to crush all the deadlines, to have an accelerated procedure to rebuild much faster”, said the head of state. For more than three hours, the elected officials exchanged their feelings.

The method did not convince all the mayors

“We must continue to call for calm and national harmony, these are the words spoken by the President of the Republic”, said Benoît Payan, the mayor of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). But the method is far from having convinced everyone. “I arrived with little hope, I come out a little desperate. I do not see any great reform ambition”, reacted Ali Rabeh, the mayor of Trappes (Yvelines). Emmanuel Macron must review the mayors to make a new point at the end of the summer.
