More than an hour of telephone conversation in the midst of international negotiations. French Presidents Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed on Friday January 28 on the “need for de-escalation” and one “continuation of dialogue” in the Ukrainian crisis, announced the French presidency. “President Putin did not express any offensive intentions (…). He made it very clear that he was not looking for confrontation”said the Elysée.

“He also wanted to continue with the president [Emmanuel Macron] the discussion today”, added the French presidency. the “dialogue is difficult”, but the “chat channels are open”.

According to the report of this conversation by the Kremlin, the Russian president nevertheless complained about the rejection of his demands by the United States and NATO. They “did not take into account the fundamental concerns of Russia”he argued.

The French president then spoke at the end of the afternoon with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky to reaffirm “France’s full solidarity with Ukraine” and remind “his determination to preserve the territorial integrity and sovereignty of this country, in a context of high volatility”.
