After speaking with the Citizens’ Convention on the end of life, the Head of State detailed the various key points of the upcoming bill on assisted dying.
The meeting between Emmanuel Macron and the members of the Citizens’ Convention was one of the last stages before the examination of the bill on the end of life. After several months of work and discussions, their recommendations were presented. They are in the same direction as the government text. “The model we are proposing is based on two legs. A ten-year plan for supportive care, including pain management and palliative care. And a bill which includes three components, supportive care, patients’ rights and access to assisted dying”detailed the President of the Republic.
Several criteria to meet
Choosing your end of life and the conditions of your death when you are very seriously ill is what the law should allow. This assistance in dying can only take place under strict conditions. To be eligible, you must be of legal age, of French nationality, capable of discernment, suffer from a lasting and incurable condition with a life-threatening prognosis, and present signs of unbearable physical and psychological suffering. Under these conditions, the patient will be administered a lethal product which he will absorb alone or with the assistance of a caregiver. This request for assistance in dying will be granted by a medical team. Doctors opposed to the act will be able to use their conscience clause.
