Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron picked up their phone again. And this time theare two leaders “discussed the necessary efforts to strengthen defense Europe while ensuring complementarity with NATO”, said a statement from the US executive on Friday, October 22.
This call was also an opportunity to prepare their meeting which should take place at the end of October, during the G20 in Rome. That’s not all: this tête-à-tête in the Italian capital will be followed by the visit to Paris of Kamala Harris, on November 11 and 12, where she will be received by Emmanuel Macron. The American Vice-President and the French Head of State “will discuss the importance of the transatlantic relationship for peace and security in the world and they will stress the importance of our partnership for planetary challenges such as Covid-19 and the climate crisis, including Sahel issues and the Indo-Pacific “, said the White House.
This call is in any case a sign that the two countries are continuing their efforts to ease tensions, a month after their differences over the Australian submarine crisis. This crisis is indeed the most serious diplomatic crisis between these two historic allies since the “no” French in the Iraq war in 2003.
