Emmanuel Gendron-Tardif declared fit to stand trial for the murder of his mother

The young filmmaker accused of murdering his mother at the end of January was declared fit to stand trial on Thursday morning at the Montreal courthouse.

Emmanuel Gendron-Tardif will however remain in detention, and treated, at the Philippe-Pinel Psychiatric Institute during the rest of the procedures.

In the wake of his arrest on January 26, the 28-year-old man was declared unfit. Judge Suzanne Costom had ordered in February that he remain hospitalized and under treatment order, in order to be able to reassess his condition.

A new psychiatric report was presented to the court this week and the psychiatrist who assessed the accused also testified, which allowed Judge Costom to decide Thursday morning.

The young man was accused of the second degree murder of his mother, Lysane Gendron, 61, whose body was found at the end of January in a dwelling on rue Fullum, in the Ville-Marie borough, in the district Center-South of Montreal.

The case will be called again before a judge in May.
