Continuation of the exploration of the work of Emilie Mayer (1812-1883), composer whose style evokes Schubert, Mendelssohn or Weber. Mayer was remarkably talented, but couldn’t find publishing because she was a woman. Two points confirmed by this CD: Mayer’s music has as much interest as those of Louise Farrenc, Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn or Florence Price, which attract attention, and it is high time that Mayer found his “Yannick”. It will be recalled that before Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra, Florence Price was defended by the very modest orchestra of Fort Smith! This is still the case, relatively, for Mayer and after Bremerhaven (Hänssler), here is Schwerin in a program which takes up, with a slight added value, the superb Symphony noh 3 “Military” in a more interesting coupling with ten-minute overtures that can serve as an entry for the composer in the middle of the concert. It’s very easy to associate with any concerto by Schumann, Mendelssohn or Bruch.
