On Wednesday, August 21, a film directed by Jacques Audiard will be released in theaters. It depicts the dream of Juan “Manitas” Del Monte, a Mexican drug trafficker who wants to become “Emilia Pérez.”

In the title role, Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón went through a gender transition in real life. Other names in the cast include Zoe Saldaña, who plays a lawyer tasked with the delicate dual mission of helping the future Emilia Pérez change gender and clearing her – or not – of the mafia crimes of her alter ego, Juan Del Monte.

Presented at Cannes in 2024, the film was awarded by the jury for the performance of its quartet of actresses. Among them, Selena Gomez, who also won the award for best actress. In her speech at the Palais des Festivals de la Croisette, Karla Sofía Gascón dedicated the film and its awards to all trans people. In the role of Manitas Del Monte, she worries as much as she fascinates under the lines of her lawyer, both intrigued and terrified. Secrets, lies, crimes and transidentity against the backdrop of a musical comedy, the director of Of Rust and Bone signs one of the least common works among those to be discovered before the end of the summer.
