The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron receives, Thursday, July 28, the Saudi Head of State, Mohammed Ben Salman. A diplomatic visit that creates controversy, since the Saudi leader is accused by two NGOs of enforced disappearance and complicity in torture in the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Mohammed Ben Salmane, the Saudi leader arrived in France on Thursday July 28. He will be received by the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée. The two Heads of State will share a working dinner in the evening. This is the first time the Saudi crown prince has been received in France since he was accused of being involved in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. NGOs criticize this diplomatic visit and have even filed a complaint against the Saudi leader.

For this working dinner, the President of the Republic wishes to discuss the price of a barrel of oil. France no longer wants to source from Russia, so the French authorities are trying to lower the prices of its other suppliers. “We know very well that Saudi Arabia has the largest oil reserves in the world and that it has a fifth of the gas reserves so that obviously appeals to a lot of people”, specifies Sébastien Boussoisresearcher and specialist in the Middle East. The government affirms that human rights will be discussed and that France does not renege on its commitments on this issue.
