Ellie Carpenter and Danielle van de Donk, two players from Lyon, announce their engagement

The sparks between them do not only take place on the ground. Two players from the Lyon women’s football team, Australian defender Ellie Carpenter and Dutch midfielder Danielle van de Donk, announced their engagement over the New Year.

The two women published a photo on Instagram on Monday, January 1, showing them on a beach, the 32-year-old Dutch woman wearing a ring on her finger. “My partner for life”she added.

A meeting at OL

The two internationals met at OL femmes, a multiple European club champion and French champion.

Carpenter, 23, arrived in Lyon in the summer of 2020 from the Portland Thorns (United States) while van de Donk was recruited a year later, in June 2021 after playing for Arsenal (England). Together, they have won two French championships (2022, 2023), a French Cup (2023) and a Champions League (2022).

The OL club congratulated them, as did several of their teammates such as Wendie Renard, Ada Hegerberg, Eugénie Le Sommer, as well as the Australian Samantha Kerr, who plays for Chelsea and other international players.
