The news that the whole world feared fell yesterday, Thursday September 8, 2022. Elizabeth II died “peacefully” in her Scottish castle of Balmoral, where she had settled this summer. Aged 96, the late sovereign leaves a whole people in mourning. “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and Queen consort will stay at Balmoral tonight and return to London tomorrow“, he said in a statement sent by Buckingham Palace.
The death of Elizabeth II comes a little over a year after that of her husband, who died on April 9, 2021, at the dawn of his 100th birthday. In seventy years of reign, Elizabeth II will have spent most of her life alongside the prince philip. Married in 1947, the couple lives together, but has a separate room, as is the aristocratic tradition. When they move into Clarence House in 1949, they both discover their bedroom, which is adjacent and communicates through a door.
This avoids being disturbed by snoring or by somewhat sudden leg movements
Thus, throughout her life, Queen Elizabeth II will have had a separate room with her husband, as author Sally Bedell Smith explains in her book dedicated to the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, the life of a monarch (ed. Ecuadors). “Aristocratic couples have always had separate bedrooms. This avoids being disturbed by snoring or by somewhat abrupt leg movements. Then when you feel comfortable, you can sometimes share your room. It’s nice to be able to choose”she says.
If everything has always gone well between Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, it may well be that this little tradition has finally been beneficial for lovers.
