Could the queen lose her crown? In any case, this is what a coalition formed by indigenous groups from the Bahamas, Jamaica and Belize wants. As pointed out the express in an April 1 publication, this initiative comes following the trip of Kate Middleton and Prince William. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have faced widespread criticism and protests during their Caribbean tour. If the couple were to start their journey in a village in Belize in honor of Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, they were forced to cancel it. A Kensington Palace spokesperson said at the time: “We can confirm that due to sensitive issues involving the Indian Creek community, the tour has been moved to another location.” Other protesters blamed the British monarchy for its slavery and colonial past. Others consider that the Crown must finally free itself from its former colonies so that they become republics. A strong message that the coalition wants to make heard today.
In a statement, reported in the columns of The Independentthe coalition, formed by the Bahamas National Reparations Committee (BNRC), the indigenous Mayan people of Belize as well as the Advocacy Network in Jamaica, says that the move of Kate Middleton and Prince William was a “so-called charm offensive”. The members of this group also claim that this trip was going “against the needs and aspirations of indigenous peoples and people of African descent in the Caribbean”can we read.
The coalition continues its statement with strong words: “We are united in condemning the savagery of Britain which enslaved our ancestors, the gross indecency of colonial exploitation, the brutality of its enforcers, and the enduring legacies of impoverishment and the ideologies of colonial era that have damaged and continue to damage our people, our society, but also our economy.”This group expressly calls for the impeachment of Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. For the moment, the sovereign has not made any comment on this subject.
