This mayor of Loire-Atlantique announced on Wednesday that he would leave office, a month after the fire in his house.

Elisabeth Borne promised to “better protection” elected officials, Thursday, May 11, the day after the announcement of the resignation of the mayor of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins (Loire-Atlantique). Yannick Morez has announced that he wants to leave his post, a month after the fire at his home. The city councilor (various-right) was targeted by threats, especially on social networks, because of the move of a reception center for asylum seekers (Cada) near a school in the town.

“What happened is very shocking and I would like to assure the mayor of my support”insisted the Prime Minister, questioned during a trip to Saint-Denis de la Réunion. She specified that the Minister in charge of Territorial Communities, Dominique Faure, had contacted Yannick Morez. “It shows our desire to better protect mayors, to respond more effectively when there are threats”said Elisabeth Borne.

“With [le ministre de l’Intérieur] Gérald Darmanin and Dominique Faure, we will continue to strengthen our action to intervene earlier, to support the mayors (…) and better support them in the face of the violence of which they can sometimes be victims”insisted the Prime Minister, considering that these attacks were proof of a rise of extremism in our country”.
