Élisabeth Borne presented her resignation to Emmanuel Macron on the afternoon of Monday January 8. The latter accepted it and, in a tweet, praised his “exemplary” work in the service of the Nation.

Emmanuel Macron has decided: Élisabeth Borne is leaving Matignon. He announced it on social networks. “You implemented our project with the courage, commitment and determination of women of States”, he wrote in particular. A few hours earlier, Élisabeth Borne submitted her resignation, as well as that of her government. Her ouster had been mentioned many times in the past, but she held on, leading a relative majority for more than a year and a half in the cauldron of the Assembly.

Weakened by immigration law

The Prime Minister had been weakened by the chaotic course of the immigration law, rejected then adopted at the end of December, after a standoff with LR. The text, hardened, had clashed with its own majority. At the start of 2023, there were pensions, reformed with pain. Discreet and a bit technocratic for some, the second female Prime Minister since Édith Cresson had finally taken to the political game. Nicknamed “Madame 49-3” by part of the opposition, it will have used it 23 times. If her relations with the president have always been cold, she had suggested that he “wring it out to the end”.
