Elisabeth Borne announces the renationalization of the electrician

It was a track mentioned by Emmanuel Macron during the campaign, and it is now official. During her general policy speech before the National Assembly, Wednesday, July 6, Elisabeth Borne announced the nationalization of EDF. A renationalization which comes 17 years after the partial privatization of the company. Until now, the company was nearly 84% owned by the state. So it will now be 100%.

Estimated cost of the operation for public finances: six to eight billion euros. This sum should enable EDF to finance its future projects, in particular the six new EPR-type nuclear power plants that EDF should build by 2037. For most players in the sector, this renationalisation was become essential in the face of the company’s difficulties, with a drop in production, growing debts and the need for affordable and sovereign energy due to the war in Ukraine.
