A France champion of carbon-free hydrogen. This is the wish of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne. A Voe formulated on Wednesday September 28 by announcing an initial list of ten projects selected to create a “sovereign sector” production of this element, which still consumes a lot of fossil fuels. The goal: to initiate a turn and produce carbon-free hydrogen, obtained by electrolysis from water and electricity produced by non-fossil energies, such as nuclear or renewable.

“With hydrogen, we will be able to massively decarbonize our economy (…). We will improve our carbon footprint. We will be able to bring out a new sector, synonymous with sustainable jobs and energy independence”, argued Elisabeth Borne, after visiting the research site of the automotive supplier Plastic Omnium located in Venette near Compiègne (Oise). The company must build there a hydrogen tank production site. The operation represents 160 million euros of investment between 2022 and 2028.

The ten factories chosen to serve the sector “will be established in 7 regions and will create nearly 5,200 direct jobs” on French territory, said the Prime Minister. These projects have also been selected by the European Commission to benefit from public aid under the first wave of the PIECE (Important Project of Common European Interest) programs to support disruptive industry and research.
