300 to 400 people had gathered since this morning in the streets of Pointe-à-Pitre, responding to the call of the collective of organizations of struggle, in general strike since November 15.
A mobilization started in front of the Palace of the Mutuality which turned into a parade, in the streets of Point, before heading towards the Abymes.
Arrived in Petit-Pérou, not far from the economic zone, the demonstrators found themselves facing the police.
This is when the situation escalates.
The demonstrators try to keep moving forward, raising barriers positioned on the road.
The gendarmes then throw tear gas canisters in their direction.
In the smoke and confusion, Elie Domota is arrested in the Petit-Pérou roundabout. According to a source close to the authorities, the trade unionist was arrested for throwing stones at the police.
The LKP leader was taken away without offering any resistance.
The UGTG reacted very quickly in a statement, considering that the arrest of Elie Domota was “a provocation“, speaking of aggression military policemen.
A few minutes after these incidents, the demonstrators took the direction of the police station.
