Pettersson hadn’t found the back of the net in over a month, his last goal coming December 14, against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Thatcher Demko made 31 saves. Bo Horvat and JT Miller also flashed the red light for the Canucks.

Bruce Boudreau’s squad picked up their first win after dropping the flag three times during a five-game overseas trip. There remains one visit to Nashville on Tuesday.

Alexander Ovechkin hit the target in the first period. He joined Leon Draisaitl of the Oilers at the top of the NHL in goals (26) and points (54). Tom Wilson was the Capitals’ other scorer.

Ilya Samsonov allowed three goals on 31 shots.

Before the game, the Canucks signed Conor Garland out in connection with league protocol regarding COVID-19.

A 25-year-old American, Garland has 10 goals and 24 points this season in 37 games. He is the third pointer of his own.
