Used on many modern vehicles, electronic keys are more and more victims of hackers, allowing cars to be stolen without damaging them.
Thieves are now attacking vehicles with technology. For a while now, vehicle models with an electronic key have been the victims of theft. The flaw comes from electronic keys, victims of hackers. In the North of France, in Lille, a man had his car stolen, worth 30,000 euros, without any trace left. “We didn’t hear anything. I knew it was stolen at 5:56 am because we got the footage on the city’s CCTV.”, explains Denis Van Kemmel, victim of the theft. For the police, it is a hack.
According to the authorities, nearly 75% of stolen vehicles are stolen through a hacking technique. According to Damien Bancal, expert in cyber-intelligence, hacking a car with an electronic key is not complicated because “they communicate with the vehicle all the time”. Finding the frequency of the vehicle is necessary to open the car. In a few moments, a car can therefore be stolen, without breaking the glass. Nearly 120,000 vehicles are stolen each year in France.
