The price of electricity on the wholesale market crossed a symbolic and spectacular threshold on Friday August 26: the price of a megawatt hour for 2023 exceeded 1,000 euros, whereas it was 85 euros a year earlier. What give consumers cold sweats. “French households will not be affected by this increase in electricity prices”however, said the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, on Saturday, on the sidelines of the congress of executives of the presidential majority, in Metz (Moselle).
“We have a cap on electricity prices at 4%” which will be maintained until the end of the year, recalled the minister. In 2023, it will disappear and should be replaced by more targeted aid, reserved for the most modest French people, as announced by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne in July.
But “there will be no catch-up on this cap in 2023”, promised Bruno Le Maire on Saturday. If rates will increase next year, these increases will be “contained”added the Minister of the Economy.
“We will keep devices to cushion energy prices” after the end of the tariff shield, “and we will take specific measures to support the most vulnerable”confirmed Elisabeth Borne in an interview with Parisian (link reserved for subscribers) published on Saturday evening. “The French can be reassured, we will cushion the increases”.
