An electric scooter accident is far from trivial. Even if the machine rolls slower than a motorcycle, a scooter or even a bicycle, the doctors of the APHP, Sorbonne University and Inserm believe that there should be no difference in the scale of risks.
>> Minimum age raised, tougher penalties, turn signals… What the government plan provides to regulate the use of electric scooters
In their study of 5,000 accident victims, conducted over 3 years, the very first on the traumatology of electric scooter accidents, the conclusions are clear: whatever the two-wheeler used, the injuries are just as serious. Users of electric scooters, gyropods, monowheels or hoverboards even suffer more from head injuries, generally failing to wear a helmet.
The number of patients admitted to hospital after scooter accidents has tripled in four years. Among the users admitted to a trauma center, many are hospitalized for at least fifteen days in intensive care. Hence the importance of wearing a helmet, but also of preventing risky practices. The researchers note that serious accidents occur mainly in the evening and on weekends, and often involve very alcoholic users.
