elected officials and residents demand the reopening of the border a year and a half after it was closed

As every year, the city of Larrau and its Navarrese neighbors renewed this Sunday thea terminal signature which sanctuaries at the port of Larrau the delimitation of the Franco-Spanish border. It is a question of confirming with the two states the existence of this border. A tradition that the two neighbors use as a pretext to celebrate their closeness.

This year, the mayor of Larrau Jean Dominique Iriart recalled in the preamble the situation of the border, closed since January 2021. In a manifesto that he sent to local elected officials, he asks for the reopening of the border at the port of Larrau, still closed like three other points in the department. At the time, the prefecture had indeed in an order closed several border points, “to fight against the terrorist threat”. Today, only four points remain closed.

Already this winter, elected officials and citizens on both sides of the border had mobilized to formulate this request.
