(Paris) Canada has yet to touch an Olympic podium in fencing. Eleanor Harvey could put an end to this drought early Sunday evening.
Harvey earned her ticket to the semifinals of the individual foil event, against American Lauren Scruggs, with a 15-14 victory over Italian Martina Favaretto at the Paris Olympics.
Harvey, a 29-year-old from Hamilton, Ontario, had to come from behind to score the victory. After the first of three periods, Favaretto held a 5-2 advantage.
The Canadian dominated the second period 7-5 and scored the decisive point with just under two minutes left in the third period.
Earlier in the day, Harvey beat Poland’s Julia Walczyk-Klimaszyk 15-6 in the round of 16 and China’s Wang Yuting 12-8 in the opening round.
