War in Ukraine: elderly people trapped

War in Ukraine: elderly people are trapped – (France 2)

In Ukraine, the oldest pay a heavy price. Those who have not been evacuated find themselves alone and terrified, while others, in reception centers, are in despair.

Despite the bombings, Alla travels 15 to 20 kilometers every day to visit the elderly and isolated people who remain in Kozatcha Lopan, in the Kharkiv region (Ukraine). At 86, Valentina no longer sees anyone: her son is dead and all her neighbors have left. She lived through the occupation for three months. Hungry, the soldiers gave her almost nothing to eat. “All that remains are old people abandoned by everyone”says Alla.

Some evacuated under fire

This village on the Russian border had 7,000 inhabitants. There are only a few hundred left. Most are in hiding, the village is partly destroyed. Many elderly people, who could no longer stand the war, preferred to be evacuated, sometimes under fire. Some arrived in Kharkiv, a barely safer city, which lives to the rhythm of bombing alerts. There are around sixty of them living in a reception center, after having experienced hell. After two years of war, despair is present among everyone.
