(San Salvador) Tropical storm Bonnie, which was moving Sunday on the Pacific coast of Central America and Mexico, where it could strengthen into a hurricane, caused three deaths and material damage in El Salvador and Nicaragua.

The victim who died in El Salvador is a 24-year-old young woman, according to the emergency services. In Nicaragua, a 40-year-old man died on Saturday washed away while trying to cross a river. And another man, aged 38, died while rescuing passengers from a bus in which he was traveling and whose driver tried to cross another river, according to the army.

In El Salvador, the storm left downed trees, flooded rivers, flooded streets, hospitals and homes in its wake. Rescuers searched in vain for a missing man on Sunday, according to Civil Protection, which specifies that search operations will resume on Monday.

“Bonnie generated very heavy rains and thunderstorms in the coastal area, the volcanic mountain range and the metropolitan area of ​​San Salvador, with strong gusts and hail in some areas,” said the Ministry of Environment. of El Salvador.

According to Interior Minister Juan Carlos Bidegaín, 250 people had to be relocated to San Salvador.

Early Sunday morning, the rains were already easing in the country, which is highly vulnerable to flooding and landslides.

Bonnie, who trained in the Caribbean, made landfall Friday night to Saturday between Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

According to the latest update from the US National Hurricane Center (CNH), the storm was moving west, where it is expected to hit the coasts of Guatemala and Mexico.

“The maximum winds reached nearly 110 km / h and a strengthening is to be expected,” said the CNH, which warned that the storm could turn into a hurricane.
