Eintracht’s Rival Midtjylland: The Baseball Strategy of the Mathematics Club

FC Midtjylland has revolutionized its approach to football through data and analytics, adopting a strategy reminiscent of the American baseball model showcased in ‘Moneyball.’ Founded in 1999, the club quickly ascended to Denmark’s top league and has since won four championships. Under coach Thomas Thomasberg, it has nurtured talent like Rasmus Kristensen and Simon Kjaer. With a modest stadium in Herning, the club offers a unique experience for fans, contrasting with larger European venues.

Success at FC Midtjylland is driven by data and analytics. This innovative Danish club has adopted a baseball-inspired strategy from the American West Coast, and it’s proving to be effective.

Eintracht Frankfurt is gearing up for its second away match of this European Cup season, traveling to Denmark to take on FC Midtjylland (Thursday, 9 PM in the hr-iNFO audio stream). This young club from the north is anything but typical.

About FC Midtjylland

FC Midtjylland stands out in two significant ways. First, it was established in 1999 through the merger of Herning Fremad and Ikast FS. Remarkably, the club achieved promotion to Denmark’s top league in its inaugural year.

Despite this rapid ascent, it wasn’t until the mid-2010s that FC Midtjylland truly made its mark. Matthew Benham, a Brit with a background in analytical sports betting, acquired a majority stake in the club and transformed its operations.

Drawing inspiration from the data-driven strategies that propelled the Oakland Athletics to success in American baseball, FC Midtjylland has embraced a mathematical approach to scouting and player recruitment. This strategy has yielded impressive results, as the team from Herning has celebrated four Danish championships (2015, 2018, 2020, and 2024) since then.

The American West Coast baseball model, famously depicted in the film ‘Moneyball’ featuring Brad Pitt, appears to be thriving in this quaint Danish locale.

The Talented Squad

Thanks to its rigorous scouting process, FC Midtjylland has emerged as a breeding ground for talent in Denmark. Notable players like Rasmus Kristensen, now with Frankfurt, and defender Simon Kjaer have honed their skills at this club. The ‘Ulvene’ (Wolves) consistently identify players who may have been overlooked by others.

However, this success means that the team identity often overshadows individual stars. The current roster lacks a standout superstar, although players such as midfield maestro Emiliano Martínez, forward Adam Buksa, and wingers Franculino and Dario Osorio do shine. Kevin Mbabu, a familiar name in Germany from his time in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg and Augsburg, also has ties to the club—a connection that dates back some time.

The Coach’s Journey

At the helm is Thomas Thomasberg, who shares a deep bond with FC Midtjylland. He played for the ‘Ulvene’ for five years following the club’s inception before transitioning to an assistant coaching role. He became the head coach for the 2008/2009 season, but his initial tenure was brief. After various coaching roles in Danish football, Thomasberg returned to FC Midtjylland in 2023 and quickly led the team to victory in 2024.

During his time away from the club, he witnessed the coaching careers of Jess Thorup (currently at Augsburg) and Bo Henriksen (now at Mainz), both of whom had stints with FC Midtjylland and are now well-known in the Bundesliga.

Exploring Herning

For Eintracht fans, this European Cup season includes exciting away games in cities like Istanbul, Rome, and Lyon. In contrast, the charming town of Herning, home to FC Midtjylland, offers a different experience. With a population of just over 50,000, it lies at the heart of Denmark.

Given its size, it’s no surprise that the local stadium is not a massive high-tech arena. The MCH Arena accommodates just under 12,000 spectators, even fewer than Frankfurt’s Bornheimer Hang. Compared to the larger stadiums on this Europa League journey, it feels almost nostalgic. The grand football stage certainly presents a different picture here.
