Eight weeks between two doses of COVID-19 vaccine for 5-11 year olds

The launch of the COVID-19 vaccination for 5 to 11 year olds will be triggered shortly. The Government of Quebec has in hand the recommendations of the Committee on Immunization of Quebec (CIQ) concerning the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

The Dr Gaston De Serres, epidemiologist at the National Institute of Public Health of Quebec, confirmed to the To have to that the committee of which he is a member has given the government its opinion on the matter. However, he cannot reveal the content, “which should become public very soon,” he specifies.

A public health source, who has taken note of the committee’s opinion, however tells the To have to that the CIQ recommends an eight-week interval between the two doses, as the National Advisory Committee on Immunization did last Friday. In an interview last week, Dr De Serres had pointed out that there was a “great chance” that the CIQ would recommend an interval of eight weeks.

The Minister of Health and Social Services, Christian Dubé was awaiting the recommendations of the CIQ before providing more details on the vaccination campaign for 5 to 11 year olds. This operation should be carried out both in schools and in vaccination centers.

The first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 arrived in Canada on Sunday.

More details will follow.
