Eight people were shot and injured in the Greater Toronto Area in two separate shootings late Sunday night and Monday night.
In Ajax, east of the metropolis, six people were shot and wounded at 1:20 a.m. Monday night, near a restaurant on Harwood Avenue. The shooting took place at a barbecue, Durham Regional Police said.
Sergeant Tony Romano said three adult men and three adult women were injured. One of the victims was in critical condition on Monday and was undergoing surgery, while the other five suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigator Kristy Mackinnon pointed out that the barbecue, advertised online, attracted several people. “So we’re hoping some of the participants can provide us with more information to help us determine exactly what happened,” Ms Mackinnon said.
Police did not provide a description of the suspect, who fled in a vehicle. In the early hours of the investigation, the police on site were unable to specify whether the suspect and the victims knew each other.
Meanwhile, Peel Regional Police said Monday that two people were taken to hospital following a shooting late Sunday night in Mississauga, west of Toronto.
Police responded to calls of gunfire heard shortly before midnight Sunday night near Pearson International Airport. Police found two injured men, who were transported to a trauma center.
One of the men was initially in critical condition, but both are now in stable condition, it says.
