The accident occurred when one of the two vehicles cut the second while making a lane change, shortly after 2 p.m. Under the force of the impact, the SUV was thrown onto the sidewalk at the corner of Richmond and Yonge streets as a car overturned.
According to what the authorities explained to the local media, seven pedestrians were struck by the vehicle which ended up on the sidewalk, while a motorist remained stuck in his cabin and had to be rescued by the firefighters.
A witness at the scene compared the SUV to a mid-air “missile”. “I could not believe it. People were flying in the air and he crashed into a building, ”he told CP24.
Four adults were taken to a trauma center to treat serious injuries, while one child was in critical condition. Another child was seriously injured, but his life was not in danger, while the other two victims suffered injuries deemed to be minor, Global News reported.
Police officers at the scene had to assist the paramedics by providing two transports to the hospital themselves, Toronto police said.
