In France there are leading groups for retirement homes such as Orpea for example. But behind, there are actually shareholders who have, at first glance, nothing to do with dependency. Journalist Cécile de la Guériviere, present on the set of news, gives us some explanations on this subject.

In France, more than 7300 Ehpad can accommodate around 600,000 elderly people. These establishments have different statutes. “Three-quarters are public or associative, 24% are private for-profit establishments”, says journalist Cécile de la Guériviere. Among all these establishments find the two leaders: Orpea and Korian.

But behind these groups are actually shareholders. For Orpea for example, “the world leader in the sector is majority owned by a Canadian pension fund and another peugeot invest fund, belonging to the Peugeot family”. As it concerns Korian, they are shareholders “like Predica, insurance subsidiary of Crédit Agricole and the social protection group malakoff mederic”, explains Cecile de la Guériviere. His investments bring in a lot of shareholders because in 2020, Orpea “distributed to its shareholders 34% of its 160 million euros in net income, or 58 million euros”.
