Ehpad directors demand 20,000 hires to deal with an “unheard of” crisis

The government must respond to the difficulties “unheard of” in nursing homes by funding 20,000 recruitments in this sector next year, instead of the 3,000 provided for in the Social Security budget, one of the main associations of facility managers pleaded on Tuesday, October 4. “Old people deserve better! We have been warning about this situation for years, but we have the feeling that we are never heard, never given priority”underlined during a press conference Jean-Pierre Riso, the president of the Fnadepa, which brings together around 1,400 of the 10,000 directors of nursing homes, autonomy residences and senior residences.

Retirement homes are facing serious recruitment difficulties and the exhaustion of current employees, which is further aggravated by the departure of many professionals, summarized Jean-Pierre Riso. Economic difficulties have been added to this, due to inflation and the non-compensation in full by the State of the wage increases recently granted to employees.

The Minister of Solidarity, Jean-Christophe Combe, announced in mid-September that he would present within six months a “roadmap” to respond to the crisis, but this timetable has upset the representatives of the sector, who are calling for “emergency measures”. To develop this roadmap, via “citizen workshops”, a first meeting with professionals is scheduled for October 11, according to the minister’s entourage.

However, many consultations have already taken place on this subject for years, observed Jean-Pierre Riso: “Everything has been said, everything has been written. We consider that this umpteenth consultation is useless and we therefore have no plans to participate in it”he said on Tuesday.
