Eh? Quebec has a Catholic past?

“Have you seen?

– What?

— François Legault retweeted a text by Mathieu Bock-Côté who sang the glory of the Catholic religion!

– So what?

— The institutions of Quebec, which the PM represents, are not supposed to be secular?

— In his text, Mathieu was content to recall a historical fact: namely that the Catholic Church played an important role in the construction of Quebec. It is reality. In Quebec, we have a Catholic heritage. The Catholic religion has long been – and still is – one of the central pillars of Quebec society.

Is Saudi Arabia blamed for being a Muslim country? With a Muslim culture and heritage? What’s wrong with remembering our history?

— But Marwah Rizqy finds that François Legault made a mistake by retweeting Mathieu’s text…

— When Justin Trudeau visits synagogues, mosques and Sikh temples to get his fill of votes, when he flatters the religious communities in the sense of the hair to ensure their support, what does she say, Ms. Rizqy?

When Marc Tanguay, the current interim leader of the PLQ, bought advertising space on the website of an Islamist organization that advocated not only the submission of women, but the use of violence to “correct women who do not obey their husband’s orders”, what did she say, Madame Rizqy?

When the same Marc Tanguay said that a candidate wearing the chador would be welcome in the PLQ, how did she react, Ms. Rizqy?

— But how can a PM be for Law 21, which advocates secularism, and boasts of the splendours of the Catholic religion?

  • Listen to Mathieu Bock-Côté respond to Thomas Mulcair via QUB-radio :

— But Law 21 does not prohibit religion! It does not prohibit elected officials from talking about the role played by such and such a religion in the history of Quebec! It does not ban any reference to religion! It does not say that we must erase any presence of religion in the public space! Nor deconfessionalize our history!

It does not say that the cross of Mount Royal must be sawn off! Remove the word “saint” from the name of all municipalities in the province! Erase our Catholic roots!

Do not mix everything … The law prohibits officials in a position of authority to wear an ostentatious religious symbol, that’s all. A Prime Minister has the right to recall that the Catholic religion played an important role in the creation of the social fabric of Quebecers!

As far as I know, Mr. Legault did not say that the Catholic religion is better than the others!

What, we should rewrite our history? Forget our past? Erase our memory? In the name of the famous diversity?

How does saying that Quebec has a Catholic culture threaten other religions?

“But aren’t you an atheist?”

– Yes and so? That does not prevent me from saying that I am of Judeo-Christian culture! I was not born on Mars! I am part of a society that has a past, a history, a culture! Where is the problem, holy ciborium?”
