Egg consumption has increased by 3% in three years, because an omelet costs significantly less than a prime rib. Some even decide to adopt laying hens, to save even more money.
Every morning, Christophe Mary, owner of hens, comes to collect his eggs at the source. “It’s nice to have at least one egg in the morning, and if you can have half a dozen a week, it’s good for cooking at home”, says this inhabitant of Augé (Deux-Sèvres). He decided to eat less meat and more eggs out of concern for animal welfare, but also for economic reasons.
At a breeder in the region, sales of laying hens have been taking off for some time. “We have had an increase of between 20 and 30% for five or six years”explains Vincent Naudin, manager of Volailles Naudin. “You meet a lot of people who live in town, have a small garden and put a few chickens there”, he continues. And they don’t cost much: only five euros a month for wheat and corn which are used to feed them so that they lay about twenty eggs.
