This CD includes one of the ten works that we selected in March 2023 among the most unjustly neglected in symphonic programming: the Symphonic dances by Grieg. These are four pieces on themes from Norwegian folklore, including typical dances called halling. The whole thing, which lasts 30 minutes, is of irresistible melodic beauty. There are some magnificent versions (e.g. Marriner or Neeme Järvi), but this new recording wins the prize in terms of energy, verve, poetry and orchestral quality. Chandos and Edward Gardner, with his magnificent Bergen orchestra, did not take the easy route by coupling this immediately endearing work with in-depth scores by Grieg. Two are tense but convincing: In front of a southern convent And Funeral march for Rikard Nordraak. But Bergliot, with ardent declamation in Norwegian, is not what we listen to in the morning at breakfast. Disorienting album, half easy; three-quarters captivating; a bit strange for a quarter.
