Édouard Philippe is a boxer and he knows it: before the fight, you have to train a lot. And the next battle, the mayor of Le Havre makes no secret of it, is the presidential election of 2027. “I never understood those who said, when there was an important and formidablely difficult deadline, that we should not prepare for it, declares the former Prime Minister on France Bleu, Friday January 19. And so that’s what I do, I do it very relaxed and at the same time very serious.”

“What interests me is what this government is going to do and how I prepare for what may happen next.”

So don’t count on Édouard Philippe to criticize the new government. He sees in Gabriel Attal a surprising but daring choice. The new Prime Minister is, according to the former tenant of Matignon, a very gifted man. The head of government will be able to count on the help of his predecessor: “I said from the beginning that I am loyal and free. I am very loyal and I am very free.”

Stand out without offending your ally

Free to the point of expressing some doubts about Emmanuel Macron’s recent announcements on education, as well as on uniforms for all. “In truth, I am not against it at all, assures the president of HorizonsI find that this is one of the decisions that is poorly handled when it is addressed at the national level.” Or the obligation to teach theater in college: “What is it for and how do we organize the class, the teaching, the year around the needs of a child and their specificity? Children are not all the same.”

Édouard Philippe is now seeking to stand out without offending his ally. The place that will be given to the members of his party in the final composition of the government will surely say a lot about the credit that Emmanuel Macron gives him. For the moment, Horizons only has one minister in Gabriel Attal’s team. This is Christophe Béchu, mminister of ecological transition and territorial cohesion.
