“Édouard Lalo”, Neeme Järvi and the Estonian Orchestra

After lamenting the rarity of this music in concerts and on records, we obviously rushed to this release by the Estonian conductor who, at 86 years old, could quietly “mill his repertoire”, but has lost none of his discoverer’s flame. . This disc notably combines the two suites of the ballet Namounathere Symphony in G of 1886 and theOpening of King of Ys. Obviously, it is interesting to receive this at the same time as the new version of Chausson’s symphony (1890). Lalo’s work is more classically French whereas Chausson’s is more Germanizing. Neeme Järvi can’t quite nail it as he should, because the recording is too reverberated. This thickness in terms of sound volume also limits the range of Namouna : it’s spectacular, but stylistically a bit crude. We are therefore very happy to listen to this music, but there is really room for another proposal, for example from Jean-Luc Tingaud, who could sort out a little in Namouna and add the Norwegian rhapsody.
